Kwun Tong pool formally opened

October 26, 2013

Under Secretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui officially opened Kwun Tong Swimming Pool today.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, she said the complex has proven popular, seeing more than 660,000 users since its soft opening in April.

She said it is an ideal venue for holding major local competitions, and has so far staged 25 swimming galas and the Hong Kong International Open Swimming Championships.

Occupying a total floor area of 18,000 square metres, the pool is the largest of its kind in the district, with a 50m indoor heated main pool, a 25m indoor heated training pool, a 50m outdoor secondary pool, two 25m outdoor teaching pools, a sunbathing area, and a spectator stand that can hold 1,500 people.

The complex has also adopted various energy-efficient features and renewable energy technologies, including solar hot water and an illumination system, and a rainwater recycling system that helps with landscape irrigation and water conservation.

The complex is a redevelopment project constructed on the site of soccer pitches adjacent to the old swimming pool. Since its completion, the old pool has been demolished and the vacated site will be used for reprovisioning the pitches and other leisure facilities.

The opening ceremony today was a "Vibrant Hong Kong" event under the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign.
