Steam inspiration:  Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-shing tours the first exhibition staged at Oi! featuring different forms of water.

Community arts centre opens

May 21, 2013
Artists will have a new space to experiment with their ideas of artistic creation as Oi! opens today.

Located at 12 Oil Street in North Point, Oi! is a new art space with two exhibition galleries and a lawn of about 300 square metres for displaying outdoor works.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-shing said Oi! is a starting point for aspiring artists to unlock their creative potential and enrich Hong Kong’s culture.

Built in 1908, the century-old complex was originally home to the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. A grade II historic building, it was converted by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department to support the development of local arts and culture. It is under the management of the department's Art Promotion Office.

The complex consists of a main block and two ancillary buildings. Its red brick walls and coarse stucco facade as well as eye-catching chimney and plumbing make it a notable landmark in the area.

It is located next to the site of the now demolished Government Supplies Department building, which housed the former Oil Street Artist Village after the department moved.

With a vision of inspiring communities through co-creative experiences that connect people to art, Oi! will collaborate with organisations and artists on programmes and activities.

“Embark! Beyond the Horizon”, the first exhibition running from tomorrow to August 18, features different forms of water as themes to echo the place's importance as the only remaining building from the original 1930s pre-reclamation North Point coastline.

Works by artists Cedric Maridet, Tang Kwok-hin, Tsang Kin-wah and Yuan Gong will be displayed.

Admission to the exhibition is free. It is also one of the programmes of Vibrant Hong Kong, part of the 'Hong Kong: Our Home' Campaign.

Oi! is open from 10am to 8pm from Tuesdays to Sundays and on public holidays, and from 2pm to 8pm on Mondays.
