Formula supply to be secured

April 18, 2013

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says the Government will hold talks with suppliers and retailers to secure the supply of infant formula before the Labour Day holiday.

Speaking to the media today, Dr Ko said the Import & Export (General)(Amendment) Regulation 2013 will continue to be in force due to unexpected adjournment of the Legislative Council meeting last night, as amendments could not be raised.

The Government will discuss ways to ensure supply with formulas suppliers and retailers, he said.

Dr Ko said the Government will review the supply chain one year after implementing the legislation, adding tests will be conducted to ensure an adequate supply in peak seasons.

Permanent Secretary for Food & Health (Food) Marion Lai said the bureau will issue strengthened guidelines to assist frontline officers in enforcement.

The guidelines cover how to judge whether certain products fall under the regulation.

She said the guidelines refer to product descriptions, labelling, instructions and pictures, adding officers can call a hotline manned by the bureau for verification.
