UK reports novel coronavirus case
February 12, 2013
The Department of Health is closely monitoring a case of novel coronavirus confirmed by the United Kingdom’s Health Protection Agency, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 10 worldwide, of which two have been diagnosed in the UK.
The new case involved a UK resident who had recently travelled to the Middle East and Pakistan. The patient is receiving intensive care treatment in a Manchester hospital.
The department’s Centre for Health Protection will continue its surveillance of public and private hospitals, practising doctors and the airport for any suspected cases of novel coronavirus associated with severe respiratory disease.
The centre will remain vigilant and continue to work closely with the World Health Organisation and other overseas health authorities to monitor the situation. No human infections with the virus have been identified so far in Hong Kong.
The centre advised travellers with respiratory symptoms returning from affected countries to wear a facial mask and seek medical attention.
