Bean curd alert issued
July 13, 2011
The Centre for Food Safety today urged people to stop consuming a type of fermented bean curd cube, pre-packed in bottles and manufactured on the Mainland, which may have been contaminated with pathogen Bacillus cereus.
The centre recently tested two samples of San Bu Bridge Kaiping Preserved Bean Curd manufactured by Kaiping Chuang Feng, and found excessive Bacillus cereus.
The samples came from different batches – one with an expiry date of July 29, 2012, and the other November 29, 2012.
The pathogen is commonly found in the environment. Unhygienic conditions in food processing and storage promote its growth. Consuming food contaminated with too much of it can cause illness.
Warning letters have been issued to the distributor and importer. The trade has also been alerted to stop selling the affected product.
