December 27, 2010

Acting Secretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui went to the 45th Hong Kong Brands & Products Expo Fair at Victoria Park today to garner support for Hong Kong's bid for the 2023 Asian Games.

Distributing promotional leaflets on the bid, Ms Hui said she wanted to explain the rationale for the bidding to the public direct. The Asian Games will promote elite sports and community sports, and provide a higher platform for elite athletes to excel on, she said.

The Government promotes sports through schools and community activities. If the bid is successful, Hong Kong will be able to focus its resources over the next 13 years on developing sports for all, Ms Hui added.

Joining her today were Vice-President of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong Irons Sze who led the Hong Kong basketball team to the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. He said if Hong Kong hosts the 2023 Asian Games it can draw global attention. The games will also bring tourists and create job opportunities.

The chairman of a coalition in support of Hong Kong's bid to host the 2023 Asian Games KK Wong said the games will enhance social cohesion. He recalled the enthusiasm and pride the community felt when Hong Kong successfully hosted the 2009 East Asian Games.

Hosting the Asian Para Games, which follows the Asian Games, will also provide an opportunity for Hong Kong's disabled athletes, he added.
