Chief Executive Donald Tsang says the Government will continue to attach importance to the long-term development of local sport, adding any bid for the Asian Games will complement the allocation of government resources to sports growth.
Mr Tsang delivered this message at a celebration reception at Chater Garden tonight to commend Hong Kong athletes for their outstanding performance at the Guangzhou Asian Games.
Mr Tsang congratulated the athletes for their brilliant achievements, which made all Hong Kong people proud, particularly on the back of their impressive performance at the East Asian Games last year.
He underscored their whole-hearted efforts and indomitable spirit in striving for the best, and called on them to persist in their efforts and to triumph again in the international sports arena.
The Hong Kong delegation achieved their best-ever results at the Asian Games by setting a new Asian record of 33.94 seconds in the women's 500m time trial cycling and winning eight gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze medals.
Also officiating at the ceremony was Chief Secretary Henry Tang, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing and SF&OC President Timothy Fok, who joined Mr Tsang in presenting certificates to the medal-winning athletes.
