Chief Executive Donald Tsang and Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing have congratulated cyclist Lee Wai-sze for winning Hong Kong's first gold medal at the Asian Games in Guangzhou. Lee won the women's 500m time trial in the track cycling event today with a time of 33.945 seconds – a new Asian record.
The Chief Executive, in Yokohama attending the APEC summit, commended Lee's achievement via his Facebook page, and cheered on Hong Kong's other athletes competing in the games.
The Secretary said he is proud of Lee for breaking the Asian record and winning gold, adding "I encourage all Hong Kong athletes to strive for excellence and wish them every success in the events to come."
He supported Hong Kong's swimmers at the Aoti Aquatics Centre today, and visited Hong Kong volunteers serving at the centre.
"Hong Kong athletes have fully demonstrated the sportsmanship of perseverance, fair competition and determination. Our volunteers have also provided services with enthusiasm and professionalism. I feel very proud of them," he said. "I wish our athletes every success in the coming events and encourage our volunteers to continue to serve with dedication to make the event a great success."
Three-hundred Hong Kong volunteers are taking part in the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games in Guangzhou in medical and venue services.
