Hong Kong must strike a balance between visitor demand and the city's reception capacity when considering amendments to the multiple-visit scheme for Mainlanders.
This was the message from Chief Executive CY Leung today, concluding his Beijing visit.
He said the Government understands the impact of parallel trading on New Territories residents, and he has passed the public’s opinions to the Central Government.
He warned that amending the multiple-visit policy may result in a drastic reduction in visitors, affecting the overall economy, particularly employment prospects.
The Government is studying ways to deal with the problem, he said, adding Beijing supports Hong Kong’s economy and tourism and will work with different agencies and provinces to help ensure that any policy change does not hurt Hong Kong people’s livelihood.
