The Government today launched the Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan for Hong Kong public consultation on proposals for stepping up efforts to conserve biodiversity and support Hong Kong's sustainable development in the next five years.
The Convention on Biological Diversity was extended to Hong Kong in 2011, and since 2013, the Government has initiated public engagements and conducted educational programmes including the first Biodiversity Festival launched last year.
After 18 months of stakeholder engagements, the Government has recommended four areas of action over the next five years, such as community involvement, in which the Government will engage partners in promoting public awareness, and build collaboration with sectors including agriculture, fisheries, business and professionals.
The other three action areas are conservation, mainstreaming and knowledge, which would see the Government continue its conservation efforts; incorporate biodiversity considerations into its plans, projects and programmes; conduct surveys and studies; consolidate data and encourage organisations to launch research on important biodiversity-related areas.
The Government will consult stakeholders and advisory committees and listen to people’s views before finalising the first action plan within this year.
