Food waste plan unveiled

February 20, 2014

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong today launched a new plan to reduce food waste being disposed into landfills.

Speaking at a press conference today, Mr Wong proposed a four-pronged approach in "A Food Waste & Yard Waste Plan for Hong Kong 2014-2022", including reduction at source, re-use and donation, recyclable collection, and waste-to-energy facilities.

Reduction at source is top priority, he said, adding the Environment Bureau will continue promoting this through the Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign. The bureau is also promoting a waste charging scheme to provide economic incentives for waste reduction.

It also plans to build five or six organic waste-to-energy treatment facilities, for which three sites have been identified.

These facilities, planned for Siu Ho Wan, Sha Ling and Shek Kong, will be in different districts to facilitate food waste collection and minimise traffic.

The bureau will also provide $30 million to support food recycling organisations to collect excess food and distribute it to the needy.

On treating yard waste, Mr Wong said the plan proposed composting, recycling and reuse, in addition to reduction at source in garden design.
