20th anniversary activities to be held

December 02, 2016

A wide range of activities will be held next year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Under the theme of "Together‧Progress‧Opportunity" the festivities will showcase the successful implementation of "one country, two systems".

An inter-departmental steering committee chaired by Chief Secretary Carrie Lam has been formed to prepare these activities.

Exhibitions will be co-organised with the Palace Museum, the Louvre and the British Museum, while a museum summit will be held to show Hong Kong’s potential to develop cultural industries.

Several top sporting events will be held, including the World Snooker Master Challenge, the Volvo Ocean Race and the UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

Another celebration highlight will be community participation to bring social cohesion through elderly visits and an invitation to the underprivileged and ethnic minorities to take part in celebration activities.

A youth ambassador scheme and youth internship programmes at the Palace Museum and the Wolong National Nature Reserve will be launched.

International conferences closely linked with Hong Kong's future economic and social development, including the Asian Financial Forum, the World Sustainable Built Environment Conference and the Belt & Road Summit will also be organised.

People can contribute to the celebration by donating to an anniversary celebration fund set up by the Government.

The fund will support major celebration events and district-based activities hosted by the Government or jointly arranged with other organisations.
