Hong Kong's capitalist system and way of life will remain unchanged for 50 years before 2047, as promised in the Basic Law, Chief Executive CY Leung says.
Mr Leung told reporters before an Executive Council meeting this morning he considered that the Hong Kong people also believed their way of life as guaranteed by the Basic Law should not and need not change after 2047.
He was responding to an article in the latest issue of Hong Kong University's student union magazine Undergrad which suggested Hong Kong become an independent sovereign state when the "one country, two systems" principle expires in 2047.
Mr Leung said Hong Kong is a part of China and this fact would not change after 2047, adding that it is a constitutional arrangement clearly set out in the Basic Law.
