Gov't seeks retirement protection views
(October 13, 2015)
Acting Chief Executive Carrie Lam says the Government will launch a public consultation on retirement protection at the end of the year.Mrs Lam told reporters ahead of an Executive Council meeting today retirement protection is a matter of concern for the Government.
A six-month consultation will start in December to collect public views on better protecting seniors’ livelihoods in light of Hong Kong’s ageing population.
However, the Government has reservations about proposals for a universal pension scheme. She said the Government’s fiscal strength, its welfare philosophy and equity in the allocation of public resources must be considered.
The consultation will include different views and suggestions, she said, adding there is room to improve the existing retirement protection system, whether it is through Government-funded social security or employer-employee mandatory provident funds.
