Chief Executive CY Leung concluded his Chicago visit yesterday by meeting officials and giving a speech.
Mr Leung met University of Chicago President Professor Robert Zimmer and talked with the institute’s Booth School of Business Dean Professor Sunil Kumar.
He also attended a lunch with members of the Hong Kong-United States Business Council and the board of World Business Chicago, where he highlighted the latest developments in Hong Kong that will help US companies realise the opportunities in Asia.
In his luncheon speech, Mr Leung noted Hong Kong has become, and will continue to develop its role as, a super-connector between the Mainland and the rest of the world, because it offers the combined advantages of “One country” and “Two systems”.
"We have a separate and different legal system. We have a separate and different judicial system. We have the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong. So ultimate jurisdiction is within Hong Kong. We have a separate currency system which again, is distinct from the renminbi used on the Mainland. And Hong Kong has been leveraging on these differences to be of service to both the country and the world.”
Mr Leung added that for Hong Kong to play the super-connector role well, it is investing heavily in its infrastructure, telecommunications and transport systems.
