Chief Executive CY Leung says the Government is willing to discuss political reform with anybody, provided the talks comply with the Basic Law and National People's Congress Standing Committee decisions.
Responding to media questions about hunger-striking students’ request for a meeting, Mr Leung said in Huizhou today that talks deviating from the Basic Law cannot help Hong Kong achieve universal suffrage in 2017.
Mr Leung said changes to political systems in societies should be conducted in accordance with their constitutions, which in Hong Kong's case is the Basic Law.
He said a genuine universal suffrage is the one that follows the law. Any changes to the electoral system that do not conform to the Basic Law will be unconstitutional and politically unrealistic, he added.
