The Central Government fully affirms and supports the efforts of the Chief Executive, the Hong Kong Government and Police in safeguarding the rule of law and maintaining social order.
Chief Executive CY Leung made the statement to the media after meeting President Xi Jinping in Beijing today.
Mr Leung said he told the President the Occupy Central movement has seriously shaken Hong Kong’s rule of law and disrupted social order. However, he said he has full confidence the Hong Kong Government can handle the matter in accordance with the law.
He said he is determined to implement universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017 in accordance with the Basic Law and the decision of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee.
Mr Leung quoted President Xi as saying the rule of law is a key foundation for Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity. The Central Government fully supports the Hong Kong Government in safeguarding the rule of law and maintaining social order. It will also firmly support Hong Kong in developing democracy in line with the law.
The Central Government urges all sectors in Hong Kong, with the leadership of the Government, to seize the opportunity to realise universal suffrage according to the law, Mr Leung added.
