Chief Executive CY Leung says he and previous Chief Executives have always respected the Police force's professionalism in maintaining daily public safety and dealing with unexpected incidents.
Speaking to the media before an Executive Council meeting, Mr Leung cited the quick arrest of the driver of a car that sped through a crowd of protesters in Mongkok just after midnight last night. This shows that Police treat everyone equally, and are not against the protesters but aim to protect them.
He called on protesters gathering in the road to heed their own safety and others’, as well as others' right to use the public space.
He stressed that Hong Kong Police officers are professional and enjoy an excellent reputation globally. They ensure public safety when unexpected incidents occur.
He praised the force for its long-term efforts to maintain a low crime rate in Hong Kong.
