Political reform in Hong Kong must adhere to the Basic Law, which does not mention the “international" standard called for by Occupy Central organisers.
This was the message today from Chief Executive CY Leung, speaking to the media before an Executive Council meeting.
Occupy Central has warned it will take action if the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decision on Hong Kong's constitutional reform does not meet international standards of universal suffrage.
Mr Leung rejected the demand, saying many political and economic arrangements in Hong Kong do not comply with international standards, such as permanent residents with overseas nationality being allowed to enjoy election rights.
He said reform must comply with the Basic Law.
