Carrie Lam backs Bar's views

(April 29, 2014)

Acting Chief Executive Carrie Lam says some of the legal views expressed by the Bar Association on constitutional reform are consistent with the Government’s position.

Speaking to the media before an Executive Council meeting today, Mrs Lam noted the association’s views on Basic Law Article 45 that nomination power rests only with the nominating committee, excluding the suggestion of a committee composed of all eligible voters as “broadly representative".

Mrs Lam said the association has also submitted views on other issues raised in the consultation document, such as the nominating committee’s composition, number of nominees and whether there should be a limit, and also the voting method for the Chief Executive election.

The Government will analyse the views collected during the consultation period, and will come up with a proposal for a second phase consultation, she added.
