CS optimistic on universal suffrage
March 26, 2014
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam remains prudently optimistic that universal suffrage can be achieved in 2017.
Speaking to reporters today after a breakfast meeting with lawmakers on constitutional development, Mrs Lam said the Central Authorities also sincerely support this objective.
"Many national leaders have come out to reiterate the fact that the Central Authorities are very determined to give Hong Kong universal suffrage in 2017," she added.
The Hong Kong Government is determined to achieve this long stated goal, she said, adding it has spared no effort to narrow differences and build a consensus.
Mrs Lam also said community members are looking forward to the opportunity to cast their vote to select the Chief Executive in 2017.
