Nomination committee irreplaceable: CS
(February 27, 2014)
The power of nominating Chief Executive candidates rests in the nominating committee, and any proposal to replace or disregard it departs from the Basic Law, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says.Speaking to the media after attending a forum today, Mrs Lam urged the community to continue discussions on the issue in accordance with the Basic Law and National People's Congress Standing Committee decisions.
She said she hopes to listen to views on issues like the nomination committee’s composition and nomination procedures.
Mrs Lam said universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017 is the common desire of Hong Kong people, and she does not want them to be disappointed.
She reiterated that all opinions collected during the consultation period will be reflected in the Chief Executive’s report to the Central Government.
