Direct dialogue valued: CS
February 17, 2014
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says the Government values direct dialogue with Legislative Council members and political party representatives on constitutional reform.
Speaking to the media after a meeting with the Labour Party this evening, Mrs Lam said there is a gap between the party’s position on universal suffrage in the selection of the Chief Executive and what the Government has been talking about. She said any method in the selection of the Chief Executive by universal suffrage must be based on the Basic Law and National People’s Congress Standing Committee decisions and interpretations.
Mrs Lam said the Government will continue to reach out to as many stakeholders and political party members as possible to put its message across, reduce differences and try to reach a consensus to move forward.
She appealed to the public to voice their views in the remaining months of the consultation period.
