CS urges reform discussion

(January 11, 2014)

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam has urged more people to express their views on political development, assuring that all feedback will be heard.

Today she and Under Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Lau Kong-wah distributed leaflets to the public in Sha Tin to promote the constitutional reform consultation. She listened to people's views on the methods for selecting the Chief Executive in 2017 and for forming the Legislative Council in 2016.

She said she noted different opinions during the visit. Some middle class people hope universal suffrage can be achieved, and constitutional reform can be dealt with in a pragmatic way to keep the stability of Hong Kong.

She said she hopes more people will express their views, adding the Government keeps an open mind to all ideas.

Mrs Lam said she will not comment on individual reform proposals at this stage, but reiterated that reform consultation should comply with the Basic Law and National People's Congress Standing Committee decisions.

She also met representatives of the City One Sha Tin City Committee and encouraged them to express their views on constitutional reform.
