LegCo feedback to be compiled

September 24, 2011
The Government will compile a report on the opinions received in the two-month public consultation on the replacement mechanism for filling Legislative Council vacancies.

Briefing the media after attending the seminar on the 21st Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law, Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Stephen Lam said today - the final day of the consultation - 13 forums have been held collecting opinions from the public, chambers of commerce, trade unions, political groups and District Councils.

"We have met over 1,800 members of the public and representatives of different sectors through these forums. It is very useful for us to be able to listen directly to views from across the political spectrum and different sectors," he said, noting up to nine organisations have also conducted opinion polls, some of which have indicated more than half of the population support plugging the loophole and amending the legislation.

"We will do a comprehensive report to make public all the position papers and correspondences we have received. We will assess very carefully and we will not rule out the possibility as to whether we should amend the draft legislation we have placed before the Legislative Council.

"Our overall aim is to ensure we can complete the enactment of the legislation within the 2011-12 legislative session."
