Chief Executive Donald Tsang says he has met the Prime Ministers of Belgium and Britain in a bid to strengthen ties with their countries, and has urged their enterprises to make use of Hong Kong's financial platform and work with it in the finance, trading, education, innovative technology and creative industries.
Mr Tsang made the statement while concluding his visits to Belgium and England after meeting British Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street in London.
He said the purpose of his trip was to introduce Hong Kong’s latest developments to the European Union, England, Belgium and Scotland, in particular Hong Kong’s unique advantage as an offshore trading centre of the renminbi.
He introduced to European enterprises the business opportunities on the Mainland through Hong Kong and the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement. He also learned about the latest developments in Europe's economy.
Hong Kong and Belgium have agreed to form a working group to explore possible co-operation in science as well as research and development.
Other leaders Mr Tsang met included European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht and British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.
Mr Tsang will head to Edinburgh to meet Scotland’s political and financial leaders, and attend a seminar organised by Invest Hong Kong.
