Protesters’ disruptive actions unacceptable: CE
September 05, 2011
Chief Executive Donald Tsang has stressed that disruptive protesters would be dealt in accordance with law.
He made the remarks tonight at a consultation forum at Leighton Hill Community Hall to gauge views on his upcoming Policy Address and next year’s Budget.
Mr Tsang was referring to the radical protesters who forced their way into a public forum on arrangements for filling Legislative Council vacancies at the Science Museum last week, and began throwing objects.
Hong Kong is a diversified and civilised society, he stressed, and different views should be respected. The protesters’ disruptive behaviour was unacceptable, he added.
Developing policies that take public opinion into account is a challenging task for the government, Mr Tsang said, especially as public opinions change in the course of debates and media reactions.
It was difficult to reach a consensus on major issues such as Hong Kong’s long-term planning. Some say the government lacks a blueprint while others say the administration should not make plans for too far in advance.
Mr Tsang said the government will listen to public views to find the best way forward. His policy address will propose to tackle issues such as high property prices, the wealth gap and the ageing population.
