Young designers fashion the future
Five institutions including the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Design Institute, Caritas Bianchi College of Careers, as well as two Mainland colleges were invited by non-profit organisation Fashion Farm Foundation to take part in a fashion show.
Held in Shenzhen last month, the inter-college catwalk show brought together some 40 fashion students to showcase their unique designs.
Fashion forward
Hong Kong Design Institute Higher Diploma in Fashion Design Menswear student Joseph So was one of them. He explained what he gained from the experience.
“I was able to see the designs and presentation of the other students. I treasure this opportunity since we can exchange insights on the latest sustainable fashion trends. The experience also helped me to enhance my design concept and presentation for future collections.”
Mr So added that he used to be an unmotivated student, but through fashion design, he regained his motivation and confidence.
“The key to working in fashion is to keep trying and experimenting. Making mistakes is no big deal. On the road to success, there are many challenges and setbacks that teenagers will face. Never give up!”
Like Mr So, Caritas Bianchi College of Careers Higher Diploma in Design (Fashion Design) student Debbie Choi’s designs were also showcased at the catwalk. One of the exhibits was her hand-stitched coat made from recycled cloth.
“I think we should all protect the environment and support sustainable living. I appreciate designers who reassemble old materials to make new clothes and I apply this design concept into my work.”
Ms Choi also believes students can share ideas through taking part in these kinds of activities.
Design showcase
Fashion Express: The Greater Bay Design Parade is sponsored and supported by CreateHK to showcase young design talent. Through the use of a fashion truck, the students’ designs travel across Hong Kong and the Mainland including Zhuhai Hengqin, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.
Fashion Farm Foundation Chairlady Edith Law said the organisation serves as a communication gateway between young designers and fashion experts, enabling them to share their experience and exchange ideas.
“In the past, we organised different activities in Paris, now we hope to help graduates find out more about the Greater Bay Area’s fashion trends and market.”
The parade will have its last stop in Hong Kong. For a glimpse into future trends, fashionistas can visit the expo at D2 Place in Sham Shui Po from August 8 to September 7. Admission is free.
