1 dead, 35 injured as bus overturns
*
Hong Kong Police

A 17-year-old woman has died and 35 people were injured after a driver reportedly lost control of a bus and it overturned in Tseung Kwan O just after midnight.

A 36-year-old man was driving the bus southbound along Po Shun Road at about 12.20am. The accident occurred as he was making a right turn into Tong Ming Street.

The driver and 35 passengers - 21 men and 14 women, aged 8 to 69 - were taken to Kwong Wah, Queen Elizabeth, United Christian and Tseung Kwan O hospitals.

The teenage girl who was sent to United Christian Hospital was certified dead at 12.56am.

The driver has been arrested for dangerous driving causing death.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang, Secretary for Transport & Housing Eva Cheng and Commissioner for Transport Joseph Lai have expressed their condolences to the young woman's family and all those who were injured.

The Government and related departments are concerned about this serious accident, they said, adding the Transport Department will urge the bus company to submit an accident report as soon as possible.

The Police will also carry out a thorough and in-depth investigation, while the Social Welfare Department and other relevant departments will do their best to help the victims and the families concerned.

"We are prepared to look at the safety measures of buses. Through the years we have already introduced a lot of different measures including the additional installations of safety devices, and so on. According to the results of the reports, of course, we can also introduce other kinds of specific measures. That depends on the investigation reports," Ms Cheng said.

After visiting the more serious patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow said the rescue team had worked efficiently. The ambulances had arrived at the scene five minutes after the crash, and all the injured had been sent in batches to the hospitals within 25 minutes.

Anyone who saw the accident or who has any information is urged to call Police on 2305 7500.
