A tax evader has abandoned his appeal to the High Court's Court of First Instance against a two-month jail sentence the Tuen Mun Magistracy imposed. He must begin serving the original sentence immediately.
Lau Siu-lung, 52, was convicted on June 3 on eight counts of making false statements in connection with claims for dependent parent allowances and additional dependent parent allowances for eight years of assessment, from 1996-97 to 2003-04.
He made false statements in his tax returns, falsely declaring that his parents were residing with him and that he had contributed money towards their maintenance.
The Inland Revenue Department found that his father and mother died in November 1987 and April 1985 respectively.
He had made false claims of allowances of $456,500 and the total amount of tax evaded was $79,800.
