PDA users can now view real-time traffic conditions free, allowing them to make better choices on travel routes and transport modes. The Transport Department's CCTV coverage of traffic conditions across Hong Kong is being made available for PDA users in a six-month trial scheme.
Assistant Commissioner for Transport Tsang King-man said the arrangement will be reviewed towards the end of the trial period. He said with the advancement in technology and popularity of 3G mobile services, the department is collaborating with the private sector to provide more traffic information to the community. In addition, maps for main roads in Kowloon and the New Territories South will be uploaded to the department's website to help drivers choose their route.
On January 12, the Legislative Council approved funding for the implementation of the Journey Time Indication System in Kowloon. Six sets of journey time indicators will be installed in advance of the critical traffic divergent points on Kowloon approach roads to the three harbour crossings. The project will start by year's end for completion in mid-2009.
