Funds to promote disabled integration rise
*

The Labour & Welfare Bureau has increased the allocation for promoting the integration of disabled people from $2 million last year to $12 million, Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung says.

Launching an integration programme and public-education activities today, he said Hong Kong is well prepared for the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by putting relevant laws and policies in place.

The Government will ensure that all bureaux and departments take due account of the convention's provisions to protect disabled people's rights in the process of formulating policies and implementing programmes.

His bureau will organise public-education activities. In addition to allocating $3 million for non-governmental organisations to organise promotional activities, each of the 18 District Councils will get $53,000 more to organise activities to promote the convention.

Mr Cheung said the Government will collaborate with all sectors of the community to build a barrier-free environment and encourage disabled people to participate in community affairs.
