Centre for Health Protection

The Centre for Health Protection has received a report of Streptococcus suis infection involving a 78-year-old woman, bringing the year's total to eight.

The Mong Kok resident developed fever and pain in the left hip on August 3, and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital August 8 in stable condition. She has no recent travel history and her home contacts have no symptoms.

People are advised to observe personal and environmental hygiene and avoid contact with pigs. If contact with pigs or raw pork is necessary:

* use protective gloves;

* wash hands after handling; and,

* clean and cover all wounds.

Click here or visit the Travellers' Health Service website for more information on Streptococcus suis.
