Aquatic products unaffected by spillage

*

There is no sign Shenzhen River and Deep Bay water quality has been affected by the recent discharge from the Xiaping Solid Waste Landfill Site in Shenzhen, Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau says.

The Centre for Food Safety will enhance testing of aquatic products at import, wholesale and retail levels he said, adding there are no signs they have been affected so far.

He told legislators today the Environmental Protection Department conducted site monitoring and water quality testing after the incident. No rubbish or other pollutants were found in large quantities along the river or in the bay and in the vicinity of Mai Po Nature Reserve.

There has been no significant impact on the water quality, ecology and aquatic life in Inner Deep Bay.

Monitoring will continue and the data collected will help study whether the incident will have any long-term impact on the ecology of Inner Deep Bay and the Mai Po Nature Reserve, he said.
