The Police Anti-Deception Co-ordination Centre started operation today to consolidate Police efforts in fighting telecommunication fraud.
Opening the centre at Police Headquarters, Police Director of Crime & Security Sonny Au said the centre's opening showed the force's determination to safeguard public property.
"With the rapid economic development and wide utilisation of technology in society, a significant upsurge in deception cases was recorded in the past decade.
"The centre is established to step up our combat actions against deception, raise public awareness, and strengthen co-ordination in fighting and preventing deception."
The centre, under the Commercial Crime Bureau, will formulate and implement strategies to combat deception.
New telephone consultation service, the Anti-Scam Helpline 18222, will render timely assistance to those in need.
Users of major telecommunication networks will receive a one-off SMS introducing the telephone service from today.
