Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung opened the first Hong Kong Maritime Industry Week today to promote the city as a preferred base for maritime business.
The event has been organised by the Maritime & Port Board to educate the public on the sector’s contribution to Hong Kong's economic prosperity.
The board’s chairman, Prof Cheung said the maritime sector has always been an important industry in Hong Kong and has evolved with the city.
As Hong Kong has grown into a major business hub and international financial centre, the maritime industry has also diversified and moved on to high value-added services.
Over 800 companies offer diverse professional services, including ship management, maritime law and arbitration, ship finance and marine insurance.
Some of the highlights in the eight-day programme are the 6th Asian Logistics & Maritime Conference, the Lloyd’s List Hong Kong Briefing, a marine insurance law seminar by the renowned Prof Rob Merkin, and an industry forum looking into the Belt & Road Initiative.
