July 24, 2011
Usage of Hong Kong International Airport continued to rise in the first half of the year, with passenger traffic up 5.7% to 25.8 million, and flight movements up 12.1% to 162,485.
The Airport Authority said today cargo volume saw a 2.3% year-on-year decline to 1.9 million tonnes.
In June the number of passengers and flight movements reached 4.4 million and 27,085, up 5.8% and 9.3% over the same month last year. A total of 321,000 tonnes of cargo was handled, a year-on-year fall of 7.6%.
Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer Stanley Hui said: "For the remainder of the year, we expect the passenger and flight movement figures to continue the growth trend, albeit at a slower pace due to the strong performance last year. Cargo throughput, however, may continue to be adversely affected by the overall economic atmosphere worldwide.”
From April to June, the airport handled 13.3 million passengers and 82,615 flight movements, a 6.6% and 10.4% increase over the same period last year, while cargo tonnage decreased by 8% to 981,000.
