Tainted tablets:  Chinese medicine Cow's Head Brand Tung Shueh Pills are taken off the shelves.

The Department of Health today ordered Ta Ang Pharmaceutical Co. to recall batch number 010313 of Cow's Head Brand Tung Shueh Pills, with the registration number: HKP-05209.

Tests found the product sample contained about 1.5 times the limit of lead permitted under the registration criteria of proprietary Chinese medicine.

As a precautionary measure, Ta Ang has also voluntarily recalled two other medicines - Cow's Head Brand Tung Xue Pills, registration number: HKP-05203, and Cow's Head Brand Fong Ton Pills, registration number: HKP-11623 - which share the same formula and were made by the same Mainland manufacturer.

The importer has set up a hotline, 2545 2218, to handle related enquiries.

The products are used to improve blood circulation, and strengthen bones and muscles.

Health officials will monitor the recall.
