Two samples fail food safety checks

June 30, 2014

Two food samples collected last month have failed Centre for Food Safety tests.

Releasing the findings of its May food safety report today, the centre said it tested 10,700 food samples, seeing an overall satisfactory rate of 99.9%.

A glutinous rice dumpling sample was found to contain a non-permitted preservative boric acid, and a sample of pre-packed cookie was found to be unsatisfactory.

The samples tested included vegetables, meat and poultry, dairy products, frozen confections, cereals and grains, and other items.

In a continuous surveillance on the use of non-permitted preservative sulphur dioxide in meat, the centre has found one fresh beef sample and one fresh pork sample containing the preservative, among 255 samples tested in the first half of the year, a 99% satisfactory rate.
