The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a case of suspected atropa belladonna poisoning affecting a man aged 50.
He fell ill after eating a dish believed to contain fresh atropa belladonna leaves at home on March 17. The plant had been grown by him.
He went to Pok Oi Hospital yesterday and is stable. Test results are pending.
The plant contains solanaceous alkaloids which can cause anticholinergic symptoms including abnormally high heart rate. High doses can lead to confusion, hallucinations and seizures.
It is not recommended for human consumption, including the plant's leaves and fruit. The root is generally the most toxic part.
