Since more than 90% of Hong Kong’s food supply is imported, the Government attaches great importance to collaborating with other jurisdictions on food-safety matters, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said today.
Speaking at the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Zhuhai Health, Animal & Plant Quarantine & Food Safety Control Meeting that opened in Hong Kong today, he noted that, with support from the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection & Quarantine, the Government has formulated the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation. It will be implemented in August 2014, enhancing control over pesticide residues in food.
With the Mainland authorities' support, Dr Ko said the overall risk of avian influenza in Hong Kong, especially the risk of human infection, has remained at a stable and low level.
Health inspection and quarantine issues, animals and foods of animal origin, plants and foods of plant origin, and food safety and control, were among the items discussed at the meeting.
