Bottled water samples fail safety checks
October 17, 2012
Two bottled water samples have failed Centre for Food Safety tests.
The centre collected 60 bottled water samples in August and September to check their microbiological quality, seeing an overall satisfactory rate of 96.7%.
Two samples taken from the same licensed food factory were found to contain the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can indicate contamination of the water source or the manufacture, packaging, transport and storage process.
A large amount of the bacteria in packaged water can cause changes in taste, odour and turbidity, but rarely causes severe illness to healthy people.
The centre issued a warning letter to the food factory, ordering it to recall the unsatisfactory water batch. Follow-up samples from the factory have passed tests.
