Surveillance boost for medicine capsules
May 30, 2012
The Department of Health has enhanced market surveillance of Chinese medicine capsules, amid media reports of Mainland-made capsules containing chromium exceeding the recommended limit.
Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow told legislators today the department has required that all traders obtain laboratory test reports for chromium from suppliers of Mainland-made capsules since May 1.
Of the 40 capsule samples tested so far, the chromium content of three exceeded the recommended limit.
About 220 of 920 proprietary Chinese medicine traders have declared the Mainland as the place of manufacture for their capsules.
