Health warning:
Cosmetic cream Santen may contain excessive mercury.
Warning issued on unsafe cream
May 29, 2012
The Department of Health today urged people not to buy or use a cosmetic cream called Santen, as it may contain excessive mercury.
The warning was issued after the department received a notification of a case of allergic contact dermatitis from the Hospital Authority involving a 33-year-old woman. She sought medical treatment at Queen Mary Hospital on May 1 for a rash over the face and neck.
She had used the cream since April 29, which she got from a friend. She was discharged on May 2 after treatment.
The Hospital Authority found the level of mercury in the product was 16,227 times the acceptable level. Chronic exposure to mercury can cause damage to the nervous system and kidneys.
Anyone who has used the product should stop using it immediately and consult a doctor if they feel unwell.
