Amended milk law to take effect

February 29, 2012
An amendment to the regulation governing harmful substances in food comes into effect tomorrow, prohibiting their presence in dried milk - including infant formula, condensed milk and reconstituted milk.

Under current rules, milk may not contain any prohibited substances, mostly veterinary drugs. The definition of milk in the regulation excludes dried, condensed or reconstituted milk.

The amendment plugs the loophole. As infant formula is the main food for infants who are vulnerable, the public and the trade welcome stringent control on formula.

The Centre for Food Safety reminds the food trade to source these milk products from reliable suppliers. Under the amended regulation, anyone who imports, sells, consigns or delivers for sale any dried, condensed or reconstituted milk products for human consumption that contain any of the harmful substances in the regulation’s schedule could face a $50,000 fine and six months in prison.
