Only one out of 126 hairy crab samples it tested was found unsatisfactory, the Centre for Food Safety announced today.
The offending crab was found to contain a veterinary drug residue, but at a level so low that it was unlikely to pose adverse effects.
The centre has asked the vendor to stop selling the product and to dispose of the affected food. It is also tracing the source and will issue a warning letter. Results of follow-up samples were satisfactory.
The centre collected the 114 hairy crabs and 12 female mud crabs for chemical and microbiological tests in August and September from Man Kam To Control Point, specialised shops selling hairy crabs, grocery stores, supermarkets and wet markets.
