Plasticiser found in Taiwan-style drinks

July 29, 2011
The Centre for Food Safety has instructed the industry to stop supplying and using three types of concentrated juices and a Taiwan-style drink as they were found to contain plasticiser di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate.

The centre today said during the follow-up investigations regarding the two plasticiser-tainted Taiwan-style drinks announced on July 26, it took three samples of concentrated juice for making the drinks at the ingredient supplier of the shop concerned, Kios Enterprise. All samples, in peach, kumquat lemon and lychee flavours, were imported from Taiwan.

Test results showed the samples contained the plasticiser at levels between 4.9 and 15 parts per million, exceeding the centre’s action level of 1.5 ppm.

The company has initiated a recall of the products and surrendered remaining stock for disposal.

A mango juice sample collected from Taiwan-style drinks shop B&W Drink was also found to contain the plasticiser at a level of 26 ppm. Long-term consumption may cause a health risk.
