Trace iodine-131 detected in fish
May 27, 2011
The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department has found a trace amount of iodine-131 in a grey mullet sample collected from the Castle Peak Wholesale Fish Market.
The department conducted radiological tests on 15 fish samples in the past 24 hours. The level of iodine-131 detected (7.7 Bq/kg) in the grey mullet sample does not exceed the guideline level (100Bq/kg) set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
Based on risk assessment, normal consumption of the fish at this low radiation level will not pose any health risk to the consumer. The department will continue to closely monitor the situation.
From March 22 until noon of May 27, there were 743 samples of fish products tested and seven of them were grey mullet. The results of all samples were satisfactory.
