Hotpot soup base fails safety test

March 03, 2011

Of the 67 hotpot soup base samples recently tested by the Centre for Food Safety, one was found to be unsatisfactory, marking an overall satisfactory rate of 98.5%.

The unsatisfactory sample contained illicit colouring matter Orange II. The centre said normal consumption of food containing Orange II should not pose adverse health effects.

The centre has told the vendor to stop selling the item.

In view of public concern about media reports on "One Drop of Incense" usage in food premises on the Mainland and the safety of soup ingredients in hotpot dishes, the centre collected different types of hotpot soup bases, including prepackaged soup packs, from several local food premises for chemical tests. No evidence of "One Drop of Incense" was seen locally.
