The Centre for Health Protection has identified a second case of antibiotic-resistant bacteria NDM-1, involving a 54-year-old woman from India.
She was hospitalised in India for subdural haematoma for three months from May, and came to Hong Kong on December 15. She was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital on December 17 for respiratory distress.
She is infected with a strain of E.coli harbouring NDM-1. No outbreak has been detected in her ward and her home contacts are asymptomatic.
There is no sign of spread and investigations are continuing.
The first case was recorded in October 2009, involving a 66-year man who has recovered.
